As a result of the corona crisis, the measure of the additional apprenticeship bonus is continued and extended to those companies that offer an apprenticeship to apprentices in alternance training who are not eligible for the regular apprenticeship bonus. The extended apprenticeship bonus of 500 euros will be awarded between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2023.

The Extended Apprenticeship Bonus

A company receives an extended apprenticeship bonus if it offers an apprenticeship in the form of a dual or alternance training programme for at least 3 months to an apprentice aged 18 or older. The temporary extension is introduced to encourage companies to provide apprenticeships and mentoring to secondary school students with learning delays (+18 years), so that they can graduate with a qualification.

This measure already existed for the school year 2020-2021 and is now extended. However, the amount is limited to 500 euros. The extended apprenticeship bonus applies for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years and, as a result, takes effect retroactively on 1 September 2021.

In this way, for the school years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, employers are entitled to either a regular apprenticeship bonus or an extended apprenticeship bonus, depending on the age of the student on 1 September of the school year for which the apprenticeship bonus is first requested:

  • Regular apprenticeship bonus (the young person is under 18 years of age at first application)
    • 500 euros at the 1st and 2nd awards
    • 750 euros at the 3rd award.
  • Extended apprenticeship bonus (young person is 18 years or older at first application)
    • 500 euros

The extended apprenticeship bonus is awarded once per school year for each young person trained by the company. The bonus is not taken into account for the determination of the maximum number of apprenticeship bonuses that can be received.
