In December this year, the ONEm/RVA will grant a supplement to the unemployment benefits for employees who are temporarily unemployed due to force majeure as a consequence of Covid-19 or for economic reasons.

This measure has not yet been published in the Belgian Official Gazette. Therefore, changes are still possible.

The employee who has received at least 53 benefits as a temporary unemployed person from March 2020 until November 2020 is entitled to this supplement.

The amount of the supplement is obtained by applying the following formula:

(X-52) x 10 if the employee has received full unemployment benefits.

The amount cannot be less than €150.

(X-52) x 5 if the employee has received half benefits.

The amount of the supplement cannot be less than €75.

X is the total number of benefits or half benefits received as a temporary unemployed person due to force majeure as a consequence of Covid 19 or for economic reasons during the period from March to November 2020.

This supplement is considered as a temporary unemployment benefit.

The ONEm/RVA will provide the payment body with a benefit card stating the amount of the supplement that will enable the payment of the supplement to the employee concerned, maybe already in December. This is a first part of the supplement calculated on the basis of the temporary unemployment benefits received for the period from March to October 2020.

Later the ONEm/RVA may revise the amount of the supplement, taking into account the benefits received for November 2020. A 2nd part of the supplement could therefore be paid out in May/June 2021 at the earliest.

Note: An employee who is ill during his occupation, who has been recognised fit for work by the health insurance fund’s medical officer and who receives temporary unemployment benefits in the meantime, is not entitled to this supplement.
